Aviation City was designed for the general aviation community as a unique and special place to stay while visiting X06. The 20×30 ft. pilot shelter features picnic tables, a great fire pit and two BBQ grills as well as running water and electricity. We now have beautiful restrooms and showers with hot water as well.
Pilots must reserve their stay , in advance, for “on airport camping” by going to our airport camping tab and clicking on the reservation drop down. Camping is free but we do require a $10 per aircraft per night tie down fee. We ask you to make a donation if you use some of the many amenities we can provide like, fire wood, charcoal, propane camp stove, electricity, showers and other things as we do have substantial expenses associated with maintaining the site. This allows us to continue to make the site available to the general aviation community.
Please contact us if your aviation group would like to hold a special event at Aviation City and we will work with you to make your event a success.

Friends of Arcadia Airport, Inc. has been working on a plan that will help grow the airport and increase the pilot population for over 2 years now. We have appeared before the Arcadia City Council 8 times and the Airport Advisory Committee 3 times discussing our plan. We have met with officials from the Florida Dept of Health and DeSoto County zoning and building departments and Fire departments multiple times.
On Tuesday August 5th 2014 we got final approval from the City Council to proceed with cleaning up a 3 acre plot on the airport that had been slated to be left outside the new airport security fence.
Our plan is to develop this area as a “Fly-In / Camp-Out” center. This area will be for specific use by the general aviation community, IE. Pilots, national aviation organizations like the AOPA, EAA, RAF and other aviation related groups.
On Saturday August 9, 2014 we spent the day mowing and cleaning up enough of the area to make a decision on where best to place the shade hangar and fire pit. The area had not been mowed for many years and needs lots more work to get it in shape for use by pilots visiting our airport.
The next step was to get the site plan approved by the City Council so that we can then do a Development Plan for the County’s approval. This was done and approved by both City & County.
Next we needed to submit an application to the FAA for approval of our proposed shade hangar.
The area has lots of trees where we will allow pilots to pitch a tent and camp out during a visit to our airport. There will be a large fire pit and eventually a 20 X 30 ft. shade hangar with picnic tables. The area may be used for aviation meetings and seminars or for visiting pilots to relax and enjoy hanging out at the airport.
We hope this facility will help draw more pilots to fly in and help make X06 a “Destination Airport” Once here they may visit area attractions and the great downtown antique center as well as many wonderful restaurants. Friends of Arcadia Airport will assist visiting pilots in any way we can to make their stay as enjoyable as possible.
Friends is also working with local businesses to offer “special deals” to visiting pilots, as we did for our first annual Rodeo Weekend Fly-In, March 7-9 of 2014. Pilots flew in for the special 3 day event. They camped out on the field and attended the Rodeo, visited downtown shops and enjoyed an evening of song provided by the Nocatee Singers after a great meal provided by Friends..
This year we hosted the 2nd Annual Rodeo Weekend Fly-In held March 13-15 of 2015.
This Fly-In offered pilots a unique experience and small town hospitality provided by Friends of Arcadia Airport.
During our 2015 Rodeo weekend fly in we used the camping area for the first time and it proved to be a very functional site. It allowed pilots to taxi right into the campsite and push their planes back under shade trees and camp under wing and near their aircraft. This feature is unique in Florida and got rave reviews from all visiting pilots.
We have received a letter of “Final Determination” of our FAA application for the camping center and will begin construction of the pilot shelter and fire pit soon. We have also finalized an agreement with the City of Arcadia for operation of the site.
On Friday September 25, 2015 we poured the 20 X 31 foot cement slab where the pilot shelter will be located and it looks great. The shelter will be open sided and have a metal roof and have picnic tables under it for use by pilots when visiting. The shelter should be complete by mid October.
We encourage your aviation group to contact us if we can assist you in any way with your plans to visit our airport and surrounding area attractions.
We have drafted a document titled How We Did It and it will be available soon on our site to download. If you would like a copy now just send us an email and request one. We can send you one free of charge. We hope you use it to develop a similar site at your airport.
Use of the campsite is by reservation only and must be an aviation related use. If you plan on taking advantage of our Fly-In/Camp-Out Center you must fill out the form shown on the link below and click send. The form will come to Friends who will reply with approval if the site is available at the time requested.
As of November, 2015 the official name of our Fly-In/camp-Out Center is “Aviation City”. Arcadia was known as Aviation City during WWI because of all the pilot training done at Carlstrom Field just south of X06. The pilot shelter is already getting steady use by a few flight instructors for ground school. We hope you plan a visit soon.
